Is it true that 90% of your body heat escapes through your head?

e.g. If I put on a hat before I take my dog for a walk in the freezing cold, am I going to stay warm, or am I going to be cold with a stupid hat on my head?

No it is not. Only about 40% of your body heat escapes through your head. If it was 90% that would mean that 90% of your blood is in your head at the same time. Unless your head is 5 foot long and the rest of your body is only 1 foot long, this is not possible. It's a matter or sheer volume.

When you get cold, you're blood is loosing it's heat as it travels through your arms and legs. Since almost everything between your waist is necessary for survival, your brain will then order the blood vessels in your arms and legs to constrict forcing more blood to these organs to reduce the loss of heat. Since we blood loss to the brain is generally a bad idea, the brain keeps about the same amount of blood it would need normally anyways.
