What are the upper and lower intake rings on a car?

My taurus is in the shop right now. The mechanic says that I hae a leak in the upper and lower intake rings. What are these rings? What does a car typically do when they are leaking? I'm just curious because I want to make sure that if I pay $500 to the mechanic to fix it that it will at least be fixed.

They are rubber o-rings that seal the upper intake to the lower intake, there are bolts with rubber grouments on them that need to be replaced aswell, you well have a check engine light on and the codes should be P0171 AND P0174 this means bank 1 and bank 2 oxygen sensor are reading lean, the car will miss at low speeds and on take off,
