Why is right wing and left wing used to describe politics?

Finding the origins of left and right wing came something of a surprise to me when i found out.
Left and right wing is traced back to the French Revolution. You see at that time when the French monarchy had been removed from power then becoming a republic with the National Assembly formed by citizens coming into power.
The National Assembly had a court where they stared putting alot of people of trial in a period that is known as The Reign of Terror. At the trials there was a lot of arguements where upon the National Assembly presided over cases.
It was soon becoming apparent that people who tended to sit on the right hand side of the courts had conservative ideas and rulings while those who sat on the far left had more liberal thinking with those in the centre being moderate.
Because when a person came into trial he had to face those of the National Assembly their sitting was arrayed across in front of him with the speaker in the middle.
Hence the term 'wing' is just a branch of the centre court. Hence those who sat on the right (side) wing were conservative people and those on the left (side) wing were liberals.
